Top Reasons to Visit Voyageurs National Park in the Fall

September 7, 2023 //  by Sara Sheehan

Voyageurs National Park in the Fall

Voyageurs National Park in the Fall

Summer might be nearing the end, but our season is not over yet, in fact, it’s almost time for the grand finale – autumn! Every season offers something special to experience, but you can’t beat the striking beauty and peacefulness of Voyageurs National Park in September and early October. It’s the time of year when I look around and think to myself “Where are you? You are missing it!”. What exactly makes the autumn such a great time to travel up north? Well, read on to learn why it is time to pack your bags, leave the hot weather behind, and fall in love with your new favorite autumn getaway destination.

Warm Days, Cool Nights (and not many bugs at all)

September offers some of the best weather for enjoying Voyageurs National Park in the Fall! While we were busy enjoying the hot end-of-summer days, Mother Nature started subtly dropping hints that the seasons would be changing soon. It started with a hint of a cooler breeze in the air, a slight change in air temperature that you could feel and smell. It is likely that the 85+ degree heat is firmly in 2023’s past, and we are welcoming the cooler temps and gearing up for all the fall outdoor fun.

Voyageurs National Park in the FallClose your eyes and imagine yourself going on a daytime hike on the trails in Voyageurs National Park in the Fall. Maybe you started your walk wearing a light jacket or sweater, but as your pace picks up and the sun warms your face, you are able to shed a layer or two and enjoy the moderate temperatures. It will be quiet, yet if you pause for a moment, you will hear the forest alive with activity. Woodpeckers hunting for bugs in the trees. Chipmunks scurrying around the forest floor to prepare their winter nest. A male Ruffed Grouse drumming to his own beat to protect his territory.

As you continue on your journey, the leaves crunch under your shoes, releasing that sweet, earthly aroma that can best be described as “autumn”. You know exactly what I mean, the fragrance of fall that often evokes feelings of nostalgia. Take a deep breath in of that fragrant, crisp air, and release your tension and stress as you exhale. Immersing yourself in nature is one proven way to disconnect from your daily stressors and recharge your mind and body, and it doesn’t take too long to feel the restorative effects.

Voyageurs National Park in the FallIn the evening as the sun sets and the temperature cools, you might consider starting a campfire to stay warm as you gather with your loved ones. Grab your favorite sweater or flannel and a cozy blanket and enjoy the simplicity of just being together.  Our family has a book of “scary” stories that we like to read together, and sometimes we play a few rounds of Mad Libs, sure to get a few laughs. And sometimes we all grow quiet as we gaze into the fire and watch the flames and embers dance around, deep in thought and perfectly content. Campfires are just so much more fun when it is cooler and darker outside.

Darker Skies, Brighter Stars

Voyageurs National Park in the FallThe days have been getting shorter since June, and now the skies are noticeably darker earlier in the evening, providing an extended opportunity to view the stunning night sky. So, stoke that campfire and stay up to observe the amazing night sky. On a clear night, you might see the constellations, the Milky Way, shooting stars, planets, satellites, and occasionally even the Northern Lights.

You won’t have to stay up past midnight in the fall to stargaze (perfect for those like me who prefer to get to bed at a reasonable hour). The skies will become particularly dark around mid-September, as the moon will be in the New Moon phase.  This will be a good time to challenge yourself to find the Andromeda Galaxy, the furthest object visible to the naked eye, only 2.5 million light-years away. (Hint: Look for the Cassiopeia constellation). Venus, Mercury, and Neptune will also make an appearance in September (visible to the naked eye, although you may find that binoculars or a telescope will provide a sharper view).

Voyageurs National Park is an International Dark Sky Certified Park, and we do our part to minimize light pollution to enhance your stargazing experience. We have invested in dark sky-friendly lighting on our property and turn off most lights later at night to reduce light pollution for our stargazers. We kindly request that you turn off your outdoor lighting at night too, your camp neighbors will thank you!

Mother Nature’s Foliage Kaleidoscope

The number one reason to visit Voyageurs National Park in the fall is, of course, the fall colors!

Voyageurs National Park in the FallAlready the trees are turning shades of yellow, providing a preview of the stunning visual contrast of the brilliant foliage against the blue waters of Lake Kabetogama that we can expect to see in the coming weeks. If you are hoping to view the vivid fall foliage in all its glory, now is the time to start planning your fall getaway. Typically, Minnesota’s fall foliage season progresses from the north to the south starting around mid-to-late-September, but the colors are changing a little earlier this year. The Minnesota DNR has launched its 2023 Fall Color Finder, so you can check in daily to see where and when fall colors are peaking around the state.

If possible, we highly recommend you plan a boating trip to explore the blue waters of Voyageurs National Park in the Fall and countless islands full of trees with vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds. Bring your camera – the contrast in colors makes for striking photographs! We offer pontoon and fishing boat rentals through the end of September, which give you more flexibility to sightsee at your own pace, explore the islands, and enjoy the park’s day use sites.

We also offer canoe and kayak rentals for active travelers who want a little more adventure. The national park offers boat tours through the end of September as well (just be mindful of which visitor center your tour departs from so you aren’t late). Private boat tours are also an option, call us to find out who we recommend locally. And of course, you are welcome to bring your own boat!

You can experience the brilliant fall foliage in Voyageurs National Park in the Fall by foot, car, or boat, but don’t wait too long, the trees have already started changing colors and you don’t want to miss the spectacular fall color show!

Plan Your Fall Escape Now

Minnesota’s North Shore and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area get more attention when it comes to fall color tourism in Minnesota, but don’t overlook Voyageurs National Park in the Fall!

Moderate daytime temperatures (not too hot, not too cold), cool evenings, minimal pesky bugs, wildlife viewing opportunities galore, and vibrant fall foliage. Oh, and world-class fishing too. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat with spectacular views of fall foliage, consider The Pines of Kabetogama. We offer a unique collection of luxurious accommodations with generous amenities that sleep between 2 – 10 people, and a beautiful RV campground that can easily accommodate the largest of RVs.

If you love a good deal, our cabins are available now with seasonally discounted rates and low minimum stay requirements, making it easier for you to plan a last-minute escape. We close for the 2023 season on October 9th, so hurry and book your trip to view Mother Nature’s fall finale!

Incredible Things To Do While Visiting The Pines of Kabetogama

May 3, 2023 //  by Sara Sheehan

Things to Do

Minnesota family resort

Like many of you, I am the one who does the majority of the vacation planning in our family, and I have planned several family reunion-type vacations too. Planning a vacation is a ton of work, there’s so much to consider and of course, you want the best experience! And it’s even more challenging if you are trying to plan a family reunion or event for a larger group of people with varying interests.  I see you, Planners! You’ve taken on an extraordinary responsibility, and I know you want to plan the Best Vacation Ever. For Everyone.  Of course, not everyone is a planner. I love it when a guest checks in and asks, “So, what’s there to do around here anyway?” I don’t relate to this style of travel (more Type A, not B), but I have had the most fascinating conversations that started with that question! No matter your travel style, or if you are traveling solo or with a large group, we offer plenty of activities at The Pines of Kabetogama on every budget that will delight you and your family.

The Best Things in Life Are Free (or Almost Free)

The Pines of Kabetogama is centrally located on the peaceful shore of Lake Kabetogama with direct access to Voyageurs National Park. Voyageurs does not have an entrance fee and you do not have to make advanced reservations to enter the park, which is one less thing to worry about (and perfect for the non-planners – just show up as you tend to do anyway!) At our resort, we have many options to keep you and your family as busy as you want to be, and most of our activities are free! Here are a few ideas to get you excited about your stay:

Minnesota family resort

Fish from our dock and you may catch The Big One. We have world-class fishing in Lake Kabetogama, and believe it or not, you can catch fish right off our dock! Last year, we had a wonderful family visit from Chicago on their first family fishing trip, and the 10-year son caught a massive Northern Pike off the northwest corner of our dock while learning how to fish. The excitement was contagious in the marina, he got countless congratulatory high fives and even shouts of encouragement from nearby boaters (who were likely jealous), it was such a cool moment! Really, how can you not get excited when a child has such an amazing experience, knowing his memories will last a lifetime? You might have luck catching Northern Pike or even walleye in our marina too.  We sell live bait in the gift shop and can lend you a bait bucket if you forgot yours. Just remember this – when you do catch The Big One, I will happily accept a sample of your fish fry dinner. 😊

Minnesota family resortWrestle with an alligator while cooling off in Lake Kabetogama. Lake Kabetogama is a pristine, clear lake, and yes, a little chilly at times but that doesn’t stop brave swimmers from taking the plunge! You might think Northern Minnesota is cold year-round, but that is not the case, in fact, it will get hot and humid during peak summer and there’s nothing like taking a refreshing dip to cool off. We have a small, clean, sandy beach for you to enjoy during your stay, and despite the subheading there are no real alligators in the lake, just our very popular alligator-shaped water trampoline. In the warmer months, the alligator is a popular hangout for guests of all ages. If you are worried about the deep water or inexperienced swimmers, we have extra life vests in the gift shop to borrow (in all sizes except infant), just stop by and we’ll get your fearless swimmers fitted and in the water in no time.

Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful view while playing a family-friendly lawn game. You can’t beat the view of the Lake Kabetogama from our expansive front lawn (and occasionally the excitement of witnessing a big catch), but if you need a little extra entertainment, Minnesota family resortwe invite you to borrow one of our many lawn games. Cornhole (or bean bag toss) is cherished by many, but we have also expanded our offerings to include bocce, volleyball, badminton, croquet, ladder toss, and my two new personal favorites – Kubb and giant four-in-a-row. I played Connect 4 all the time as a child, and the giant version is even more addictive (bigger is better in this case, and it’s going to be really hard for me not to play this all summer). Last year, I was introduced to Kubb (also known as Viking Chess) by one of our staff members at a team picnic, and we had such a fun time together playing this game (while eating a delicious fish fry, see previous section). This Swedish yard game is rumored to have been played with real skulls and bones by the Vikings, but this version includes wooden blocks and sticks. It is fairly simple, think a cross between horseshoes and bowling, but I guarantee your friendly competitive side will come out and you will share many laughs and cheers with your loved ones while you play this new game.

Go on an exploratory scavenger hunt. You are not here to sit inside all day, so why not go on a nature scavenger hunt? We have two scavenger hunt options for you in our gift shop, a photo scavenger hunt for the younger children, or a longer scavenger hunt checklist for all ages. Take your scavenger hunt “to go” on one of Voyageurs National Park’s many (free) hiking trails, or simply take a leisurely walk around the resort grounds. Remember, it’s not a race! I urge you to take the time to explore your natural surroundings, it’s amazing how much more you can see (and hear and smell) by simply standing quietly and watching.

Find an interesting new read. We have a well-stocked lending library of books and magazines for you to browse new titles and maybe even find your next good read. Last year, one avid reader happened upon a book in a series that she had been waiting to read, she was thrilled! Stop in to say hello, browse our books, and if you can, leave one behind for someone else. I love to read, just about anything and everything, and I can attest that a cozy place to read is curled up in a chair by the community firepit…

Minnesota family resortMeet new friends by the community firepit. I firmly believe that anyone can get along and make a connection if they can find something in common, and all of our guests have at least one thing in common – you are among the exclusive club of those that have visited Voyageurs National Park! Don’t be shy, grab a chair and say hello and maybe you’ll spark up an amazing conversation and learn something new. If you have kids, they will enjoy meeting new friends too. My kids gravitate towards other children and love to have someone to play with, and I’m sure yours do too. It’s entertaining to watch a group of kids create a new game (such as “Fastest Tiger in the Wild West” or “Lava Monster”, I didn’t make these up) and I’ve seen several groups of kids choreograph new dance and cheer routines. While your kids are entertained, you can sit back and relax and enjoy those conversations with your old and new friends too.

Minnesota family resortExplore the night sky. Voyageurs National Park is a certified International Dark Sky Park, which means that it has minimal light pollution, and you can see so many more stars. We have replaced the lighting on our property to be dark-sky friendly as well, meaning you can view the magnificent night sky like never before. Bright stars, brilliant planets, the Milky Way, satellites, and the Northern Lights (when they happen) are all visible from just about anywhere on our property, and it’s amazing what you see when you take a quiet moment and look up. The community firepit (and the entire front lawn really) is the best location to view the Northern Lights if you are lucky, and if you do see them, you will have something else in common with other guests to talk about the next day around the community firepit!

Borrow a game for entertaining family fun. Sometimes the best memories can be made simply by sitting around the table playing a classic board game.  New in 2023, we are adding a brand-new collection of family games for you to borrow and enjoy. Stop in at the gift shop for a list of our selected games and then go enjoy a relaxing game with your friends and family. My favorites are Parcheesi, Scattegories, and Mexican Train Dominoes.

Minnesota family resortTry a new water sport. For a nominal fee, we offer canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards for rent by the hour, first come first serve. This is a low-commitment way to try out a new sport, and despite its size, Lake Kabetogama can be as smooth as glass on a quiet day. We have a protected bay for those that are new to paddle sports, or for the more experienced, you can paddle out further to explore the lake and nearby islands. If you didn’t know, Voyageurs National Park is named after the voyageurs (a French word for “traveler”) who, more than 250 years ago, traversed the interconnected waterways by canoe. (I hope they mostly had pleasant weather).

Treat Yourself to an Expedition on the Water

With Voyageurs being a mostly water-based park, you might want to get out on the lake to find prime fishing hotspots or points of interest only accessible by boat, and there are options at nearly every price point.

Lake Kabetogama Boat Rentals. We also offer Lake Kabetogama boat rentals right here at the resort, and we have a variety of fishing boats and pontoons starting at $135/day up to $345/day, depending on the boat you select. Our boat rentals are by the day and start as early as 8 am (or you can sleep in and arrive when you are ready). Our marina staff will orient you to the boat and then you have it until later that evening (times vary by season). Our rental timeframe gives you a full day on your boat to go fishing and exploring on your own agenda.

Minnesota family resortSchedule a Voyageurs National Park Boat Tour. Not everyone is eager to rent a boat or to be responsible for safely navigating the waters, and that’s completely understandable. The national park offers a variety of boat tours throughout the summer months, departing from all three visitor centers, and the per person price runs between $20 – 60 per person depending on your age and the cruise you select. Tickets are available for purchase starting on April 15th of each year for that summer’s tours, and I recommend that you book as soon as you know which cruise you want to join as some tours will sell out in advance. The park’s boat tours visit popular tourist destinations such as Kettle Falls and Ellsworth Rock Gardens, among others, and they also have a late-night cruise where you can view the night sky and learn about constellations.

Charter a Lake Kabetogama Private Boat Tour Guide.
For a more personalized experience, you might consider hiring a local Kabetogama private tour guide. This is more in the “splurge” category, as price ranges typically start around $200 and go up (variables based on the number of people, length of tour, distance traveled, so have a conversation with your tour guide to see what works best for your budget). This might be worth it if you prefer a private excursion with your family with greater flexibility to spend more (or less) time at certain locations compared to a park tour with a strict schedule.

Hire a Lake Kabetogama Fishing Guide. Lake Kabetogama has world-class fishing, and you’ll find popular species such as walleye, sauger, Northern Pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, yellow perch, and more. (Again, happy to taste test your catch of the day). Many of our guests choose to hire a local Kabetogama fishing guide on their first day of fishing. The local guides will know where the fish are biting, teach you how to catch them, and more often than not get those fish on your dinner plates! This also falls in the “splurge” category, however well worth the money if you are intent on catching your fishing limit while visiting the best fishing lake in Northern Minnesota.

Northern Minnesota Day Trips

If you can work it into your itinerary, there are a few things that I would add to the “must do” category.

Minnesota family resortSnap a photo on the Kabetogama Walleye. On your way in, or out, of Kabetogama, you absolutely must stop to get your picture on the giant walleye! Climb on top of walleye (complete with a saddle) to capture a family photo that you will cherish for years. This also might entertain your group for a bit, especially if you travel with a crowd that likes to ham it up for the camera. If you appreciate giant, touristy sculptures (I know I am not alone here), or even if you don’t (who are you), then you can’t miss this photo opportunity. Even better, make snapping a photo on the Kabetogama walleye a new annual family tradition (or if you are my kids, at least four times a summer).

Minnesota family resortVisit downtown International Falls. International Falls has a cute little downtown area on 3rd Street with shopping and restaurants that will amuse you for an afternoon. Ronning’s is one of the charming stores that has practical items like clothing and shoes, unique gifts, souvenirs, games, and locally sourced food and crafts.  I challenge you to walk out of this store without a bag! While you are downtown, you must stop by Smokey Bear Park, where you will find…drumroll…a giant Smokey the Bear statue! Smokey stands 26-feet tall and has been a resident of this International Falls city park since 1954. He’s still just as handsome as ever and waiting for you to memorialize your family vacation.

Things to doObserve bears up close in the wild then have a “dam” good meal. It will take you about an hour to drive to the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary, but it is a really cool opportunity to see black bears up close doing their black bear thing. Last year we went at the end of the season when the bears were preparing for hibernation, and holy cow the bears were well on their way to achieving their hibernation goal weight! The staff do a nice job explaining the history of the sanctuary and will answer any question you have about black bears. This is another moment where if you just stand still and observe, you will bear witness (haha) to the black bear culture and capture amazing wildlife photographs. We happened to see a little kerfuffle between a mama bear and another bear who was apparently being annoying. While mama was taking care of business, her unbearably cute (sorry) cubs practically flew up a tree where they hung out for a while, delighting the visitors. My advice is to get there as soon as the sanctuary opens in the evening, because you might be surprised at how long you want to stay and watch and learn. On your way out, stop by the gift shop (proceeds help support the bears), where you can find just about anything you can imagine with a bear on it. After this afternoon/early evening outing, you might be as hungry as a bear (seriously, I can’t help it). I suggest you stop by The Dam Restaurant for a bite to eat. Our kids got a giggle out of ordering the “dam” fries and the “dam” steak, and you can imagine this dinner table conversation got very silly and went downhill fast, but we made a lasting memory!

Best. Vacation. Ever!

Well, are you excited yet? I can’t wait for the 2023 season to get into full swing and share more of my favorite memories with you! I am hoping that you have decided to choose The Pines of Kabetogama as your Kabetogama lodging destination. We offer a collection of luxurious accommodations with generous amenities that sleep between 2 – 10 people, and a beautiful RV campground that can easily accommodate the largest of RVs so your whole family can stay…and play! With an abundance of activities sure to please everyone in your group (whether you planned them in advance or not), you will hear the praise “Best. Vacation. Ever.” From Everyone. We can’t wait to meet you!

Explore Stunning Kabetogama: Five Reasons to Visit in 2025

April 1, 2023 //  by Sara Sheehan

Kabetogama – Five Reasons to Visit The Pines

If you are looking for a Northern Minnesota resort with outdoor fun for the entire family, look no further than The Pines of Kabetogama! Centrally located in Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park, we are a popular vacation destination for fishing groups, families, RVers, National Park explorers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

The Pines of Kabetogama resort features a variety of accommodations, ranging from an exquisite collection of luxurious cabins and glamper, to our spacious RV campground, which gives larger groups more options to stay and play together. Whether you are seeking to reconnect and recharge in a serene natural landscape or embark on a thrilling outdoor adventure in Mother Nature’s playground, there’s something for everyone. The possibilities are endless – fishing, boating, kayaking, canoe trips, hiking, swimming, stargazing, birdwatching, you name it – you have the freedom to design your ideal escape. From the practical to the magical, keep reading to discover five reasons to book your stay at The Pines of Kabetogama resort!

#1 Traverse the natural landscapes of Voyageurs National Park where few have gone before.

Voyageurs National Park is consistently cited by various travel outlets as one of the least visited National Parks in the continental United States, yet simultaneously billed as a can’t-miss destination. And it is truly spectacular! Spanning over 218,000 acres of land and water, the park is full of hidden gems that can’t be fully appreciated until you experience them for yourself.

The Pines of Kabetogama is centrally located in Voyageurs National Park, nestled among the towering pines along the shoreline of Lake Kabetogama. People often ask me, how close are you to the National Park? Well, as soon as you dip your pinky toe in the lake, you are officially in Voyageurs National Park! Although much of the park is only accessible by boat, maybe you are not a “water person”, as one guest described herself. That’s no reason to dismiss a trip to Voyageurs! You don’t have to own a boat, like boating, or even like the water to enjoy yourself (truly, choose your own adventure).

Kabetogama

One thing I recommend to our guests is to carve out time to tour at least one of the three Visitor Centers to partake in the various activities offered for adults and kids. Each Visitor Center is different, so a visit to all three is worthwhile if you have the time. The Pines of Kabetogama is in the middle of all three Visitor Centers, and only one mile (a 5-minute drive or 20-minute walk) from the Kabetogama Visitor Center. The Rainy Lake Visitor Center is a 45-minute drive northwest from the resort. Prepare for a beautiful, scenic drive, and here’s a tip: Set your GPS and trust it, there’s a portion of this drive that might make you wonder if you will ever see civilization again, it’s awesome. At the Rainy Lake Visitor Center, you will also find a multi-use paved path that is popular with walkers, bikers, and it is pet-friendly too. In the other direction from the resort heading east, the Ash River Visitor Center is a 25-minute drive, and the center itself is located in the historic Meadwood Lodge. Keep your eyes peeled for rare wildlife viewings along your drives, you never know when you might spot a deer, bear, or even a wolf!

For those that prefer to continue their adventure on solid ground, there are 10-hiking trails accessible by car within Voyageurs, each with varying degrees of difficulty from easy to strenuous. It’s highly likely that you will embark on a hike and not encounter another person, so feel free to take a moment to find a spot to just stop, use your five senses, and completely immerse yourself in the healing powers of nature (pet owners, be aware that most park trails are not pet friendly). If you want to avoid crowds and immerse yourself in the wilderness, Voyageurs National Park is a can’t miss destination, even if you stick to land-based activities.

#2 On-site canoe, kayak, paddleboard, fishing boat, and pontoon rentals give you options to explore the expansive waterways.

If your motto could be “boat hair, don’t care” then you will love the plentiful opportunities to go deeper into Voyageurs National Park to locations only accessible by water. You have many options to explore the waterways and gain access to raw, undeveloped nature. And explore you should – about 1/3 of Voyageurs National Park’s 218,000 acres is water! The park includes four major lakes, including Lake Kabetogama, 26 smaller interior lakes, and over 900 islands. On Lake Kabetogama, there are 200 islands and dozens of day-use sites available for you. Imagine yourself boating across the lake, your cheeks warm and kissed by the sun, the wind blowing your hair around, the water spray cooling you off. You see a small island and decide to pull over to spend the day picnicking, swimming, fishing, and exploring. Many of our guests rent a boat with no particular destination in mind and return full of stories about their grand adventures in the wilderness. More often than not, our guests will comment on how the solitude was refreshing for the mind and soul and afforded the opportunity for their family to connect on a deeper level. To me, that sounds like the entire point of a family vacation! For those that prefer to have a destination in mind, Voyageurs has five hiking trails, 13 visitor destinations, and countless fishing hotspots that can be visited only by boat.

Kabetogama
The Pines of Kabetogama offers both fishing boats and pontoon boats available for daily rent. A motorized boat rental will allow you to go access more remote areas of the park to find the perfect fishing spot or to explore at your own leisure. We do recommend advance reservations! When you rent a boat, our marina staff will provide you with important information about boat safety and operation, and ensure you know how to use the onboard GPS and fishing equipment. If you have a destination in mind, they can provide directions too. If you desire a more physical adventure, Lake Kabetogama is popular for canoes trips, kayaking, and paddleboarding; on a calm day, the lake can be smooth as glass (on windier days, you’ll get a workout and a boater’s hairstyle). We have canoes, kayaks, and paddleboard rentals available by the hour, first come, first serve. Lake Kabetogama is a great place for even first-timers to try canoeing, kayaking, or paddleboarding in our protected bay, or you can venture beyond the bay to explore nearby islands. As you paddle and explore the undeveloped shoreline along Lake Kabetogama, it’s easy to imagine what it would have been like for the voyageurs who traversed the waters for transportation.

If you prefer a group guided tour, the National Park Service offers seasonal boat tours departing from all three visitor centers. There are also local private guides in the area for a more tailored experience. Fishing guides can help you catch your coveted trophy fish, others can share the history of the park and local area, and water taxis can get you from land to island and back again. Of course, you can bring your own boat too. I highly recommend you reserve dock space in our marina. Having a boat slip saves you the hassle of having to launch your boat and pull it out of the water every day. You can come and go as you please and while you are docked, you can plug in your electronics while you are taking a break from boating.

Voyageurs National Park is largely a water-based park, so to truly experience and enjoy the beauty of the park, I recommend you plan to get out on the water, even if just for a few hours.

#3 Observe the incredible night sky, and you might just see the Northern Lights (yes, even in the summer months)

We know that seeing the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is on the “bucket list” for many people. How could it not be? The photos we’ve all seen by those lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time are stunning, almost too good to be true. I knew that it was possible to see the Northern Lights in Minnesota, but also thought the best time of year was during the darker (and colder) winter months, or during the overnight hours when I prefer to be sleeping. Well, I am here to tell you that it is definitely possible to see the Northern Lights in Minnesota year-round, even in the summer, because we have experienced them many times!

Northern Lights Voyageurs National Park

One of my favorite memories from the 2022 season was when our guests were treated to Mother Nature’s “fireworks” over 4th of July weekend. At about 9 pm, we were starting to see the early signs of a potential Northern Lights display, and word traveled fast around the resort. As the sky grew darker, more and more people gathered on our front lawn with their cameras, excited about the possibility of what might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The crowd was murmuring with excitement as they began to capture the green and purple hues on their cameras, not quite strong enough yet to see the intense colors with the naked eye. The Northern Lights were happening, and it was only a matter of time. The electricity in the air was palpable. I was struck by the humanity of the moment. Here we all stood, complete strangers really, drawn together by a magical experience. It was incredibly moving to watch strangers connect and bond, sharing stories of past Northern Lights sightings and other celestial events, and even sharing photography tips. As the skies continued to darken, oh, Mother Nature did not disappoint. The crowd grew quieter, perhaps more introspective, lost in a moment of wonder and awe as the sky danced in front of their eyes. On this particular evening, the Northern Lights were visible over the entire resort, a stunning 360-degree display of green, pink, and purple streaks frolicking overhead like “angels dancing in the sky” (according to my 10-year-old).

Kabetogama
So yes, it is possible to see the Northern Lights, even in the summer months. I’m definitely not an expert, but here are some tips to keep in mind based on my personal experiences. Find an app that provides the probability of Northern Lights in your area based on solar activity (there are plenty of free options) and check the weather forecast because clear skies are a must! Plan to stay up a little bit later than usual in the summer months because the sun sets later in the evening, it will be worth it even if you don’t see the Northern Lights. Voyageurs National Park is a certified International Dark Sky Park, and you will be amazed at what you see while stargazing! (I’d also like to mention that we have dark sky-friendly lighting on our property and turn off some lights later at night to reduce light pollution for our stargazers). If the forecast looks good, keep your eyes on the northern horizon. We are located on the south shore of Lake Kabetogama with a perfect view of the northern sky, and our expansive front lawn is a great place to settle in with an unobstructed view of the horizon. Keep in mind that in the summer months, the beginning of a Northern Lights show might not be what you are expecting. We have heard countless stories of guests who thought they saw fog, or a random cloud, or even light pollution (nope, no light pollution!) on a clear night and then went to bed only to learn that they missed out. If you aren’t quite sure what you are looking at, snap a few photos, the camera will capture the colors before you can see them with your eyes, or check back again in 30 minutes. Don’t forget to share your stories and photos, I absolutely LOVE it when our guests have an unforgettable night sky experience at our resort.

#4 Wi-Fi that is actually really, really fast, and it’s complimentary too!

Five Reasons to Visit Kabetogama

It is so nice to get away and disconnect from technology (and to be able to tell your coworkers that you are going “off grid” because no one wants to be bothered while on vacation). The reality is that sometimes you can’t totally disappear and be unreachable. I’ve gone on many vacations where either Jason or I had to check in to work for an urgent meeting or to make sure a project was running smoothly in our absence. We have also traveled without the kids, and it was important to have an open line of communication with Grandma and Grandpa, just in case. I remember one trip where we knew the Wi-Fi and phone service would be spotty, but I had to get in touch with someone. I was walking around the campground with my phone in the air trying to get any signal. We’ve all been there, and it is stressful! Lots of campgrounds advertise Wi-Fi service, but when you show up, you find out it costs extra, or the service is so terrible it’s practically unusable (not that you won’t keep trying). Not at The Pines of Kabetogama. We have invested in some serious infrastructure to ensure that every guest has excellent Wi-Fi, and it is complimentary. Further, we have configured our network so that each reservation has its own private network. What does that mean exactly? It means that you will have excellent download and upload speeds and you are not sharing the network with your neighbors. If the family in the site next to you wants to stream television on five devices, it will not impact your internet experience. If you want or need to stay connected while you are on vacation (working or schooling remotely?), you can book with confidence knowing you’ll be able to connect when you need to. But feel free to tell anyone you don’t want to bother you that you are unreachable, we totally understand!

#5 On-site, coin-operated laundry facilities for your planned (and unplanned) laundry needs

I know laundry isn’t the sexiest of resort amenities, but let’s be real, it is a necessary part of life and sometimes you have to do it on vacation. Before kids, Jason and I used to travel the world and we had our packing lists down to include only exactly what we needed. Nothing more, nothing less, and I never had to do laundry on our trips. Traveling with kids is a whole different ballgame, and we had to rethink packing, and eventually laundry, for our family vacations. On shorter trips we could just bring a few extra items “just in case”, but it got more complicated on longer trips (Me: “Ok kids, make sure you pack 24 pairs of underwear!” Kids: “I don’t have 24 pairs of underwear!) I admit that initially, I didn’t want to do laundry on vacations, but at some point, you have to make a choice. Buy unnecessary amounts of clothing for one long vacation and come home with mountains of laundry, or plan to do a load or two of laundry on the road. Or maybe you are an excellent packer and don’t plan to do any laundry, but then something happens, and you HAVE to do laundry, urgently. (Unfortunately, I have experienced this, and I am sure you have too). Whether or not you plan to do laundry, rest easy knowing that we do have very clean, coin-operated laundry facilities on site. We exchange quarters for cash in the office and sell laundry detergent too, just in case!

Don’t miss out! Book your reservation today at The Pines of Kabetogama.

There are many reasons to stay at The Pines of Kabetogama, and here is one more. We offer online reservations, so you can search for availability and even reserve online at your convenience. Of course, we love to help you plan your vacation, so feel free to call us too. We answer our phones year-round and encourage you to call us anytime you have a question, or to book your reservation if you prefer. We can’t wait to host you at our beautiful northern Minnesota resort!

Must-See Minnesota Cabin Resort: New Cabin Updates for 2023

March 8, 2023 //  by Sara Sheehan

Luxurious Minnesota Cabin Resort Update

Minnesotans love the outdoors year-round but when the weather starts to warm up, you will hear more people ask, “What are you doing this weekend?” and in response, you will often hear, “We are heading up north to a cabin”. Known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, there are plenty of options for all-weather outdoor fun in Minnesota, but there is something special about exploring Northern Minnesota when the weather is pleasant and relaxing in a cabin by the lake. At The Pines of Kabetogama, we offer an exquisite collection of luxurious cabins and spacious RV campsites surrounded by the stunning landscape of Voyageurs National Park. If you are searching for a Minnesota cabin resort for your next family vacation, explore what we have to offer and learn why past guests describe The Pines of Kabetogama as a must-see Minnesota Cabin Resort.

Minnesota natives largely agree that visiting a cabin in the summer is part of the culture, and it’s worth taking the time to experience it for yourself. My family vacations growing up included a trip to Disney World over spring break and road trips to visit family members. We didn’t own a family cabin, and we didn’t take trips “up north”. In our 20s, Jason and I traveled quite a bit around the world (thanks to a job with amazing travel benefits) and didn’t spend a lot of time touring northern Minnesota. Since we often traveled out of state, we didn’t realize how much the neighborhood quieted down in the summertime until we had kids. During the school year, our neighborhood is full of kids running from house to house, bouncing on each other’s trampolines, racing their bikes and scooters around the block, and playing every outdoor game you can imagine. But once school lets out, the neighborhood becomes a ghost town. At one point I thought we were the loudest family on the block, until I realized that we might be one of the only families in town.

I was intrigued about all these cabins up north and wanted to learn more, so I started to probe my fellow Minnesotans for more information, tell me more about this cabin.  I learned that some families owned a cabin that had been in the family for generations. Others owned land and were building their dream cabin, literally, with their own hands. Others visited the same cabin resort year after year with their kids, just like their parents and grandparents did. A cabin up north could mean anything from a rustic lean-to on acres of land with no running water to a luxury log home with all the amenities, a rustic cabin rental to a fancy resort, and everything in between. A little bit of everything, something for everyone. We decided to give it a try ourselves and plan a family vacation that would give us a classic Minnesota cabin experience. We too wanted to explore Minnesota, “head up north to the cabin” and spend time as a family in the great outdoors swimming, fishing, and boating in one of Minnesota’s many lakes.

Minnesota Cabin Resort

With all the Minnesota lakefront cabin and fishing resorts available, you might think it would be easy to find a rental cabin for a long-weekend trip that met our needs, but it was not. All vacations take time to research and plan and seeking out the perfect rental cabin was no different. At some locations, you need to be prepared to book at least a year in advance. Some popular Minnesota cabin resorts have returning families who are first in line to prebook their favorite cabin for the next year. Makes sense, but nearly impossible to reserve especially on “short notice” (less than a year out). Another challenge we faced was that many cabin resorts had a one-week stay requirement, meaning you must stay for a full seven nights, typically Saturday – Saturday. That didn’t work well for us. We were still fairly young in our careers and without tenure, paid vacation time was scarce, remote work was extremely rare, and we had young (and expensive) kids. We didn’t want to spend the annual vacation budget on one cabin rental, but rather maximize our time and budget to visit many destinations. Also, many resorts do not advertise availability online or offer online booking options, so I would have to call and hope for the best that our dates worked or spend a significant amount of time on the phone to find alternate dates that did work with our busy schedule. Nevertheless, I persisted and found a privately owned lakeside resort that offered private cabin rentals with a full kitchen, a full bathroom, no requirements for a week-long stay, and had lake access with either dock space or boat rentals. We had our first Minnesota cabin resort reservation!

Minnesota Cabin Resort

On our first cabin trip, we packed up the car, stuffed full of blankets, pillows, towels, clothes for all kinds of weather, food, fishing poles, life vests, personal care items, and the kids and headed up north to a lake resort to experience our first classic Minnesota vacation. The “deluxe” cabin itself was just ok, it was adequate for a weekend, nothing fancy. It had the necessary essentials, two bedrooms, one bathroom, a small kitchen, and a living room. I would describe the overall condition of the cabin as “tired”, but it was neat and had a rustic charm to it. I didn’t love that we had to pack our own towels and linens but learned that it is not uncommon to have to haul your own bedding. We did, however, have a wonderful time as a family enjoying the lake life for a long weekend. We fished off the dock, the kids even caught some little fish with their cute hot pink fishing poles, we went on nature hikes, and enjoyed boat rides around the like. To my surprise, the kids were very curious in nature, and were entertained by the simple things, like rocks, leaves, frogs, and worms. We saw eagles and deer and even had a thrilling encounter with a black, furry, slightly wet creature that scurried across the hiking path in front of us (to this day I am still not exactly sure what it was). Although we didn’t have a desire to return to this particular lakeside resort, we did enjoy the experience and in the following years, booked several long weekend stays at other cabin resorts in Minnesota. We too, fell in love with the Minnesota cabin resort experience.

Fast forward many years, we started our journey to seek out a resort that we could call our own (we loved cabin life so much and it was our dream to own a resort business someday). Many resorts were very similar to the cabins we had visited (and several were in desperate need of some serious repair). But then we visited The Pines of Kabetogama. First notable difference was the expansive property featuring a 60-foot granite cliff. Five gorgeous rental cabins were nestled along the base of the cliff with spacious front and back yards to each cabin and large covered decks with a lake view. The shoreline had a meticulously manicured large front lawn with a small playground for the kids, a large community firepit with a view of the lake and night sky, and beautiful marina. Before we toured the cabin, we could see that this resort was unlike any other Minnesota cabin resort we had visited over the years, it was stunningly beautiful and well-maintained. We had the opportunity to tour each of the cabins, and … wow. I was floored, I didn’t know cabin resorts could be this luxurious, we hadn’t experienced anything like it during our family vacations, and not for lack of trying or budget, I simply didn’t come across anything similar in all our searches over the years. We were impressed.

Must-See Minnesota Cabin Resort

Many of our guests have shared similar comments about how they, too, were impressed with The Pines of Kabetogama. We invite our guests to share their experiences on various travel review websites, perhaps you have read some of them as you consider The Pines for your cabin vacation. We leave a guestbook in each cabin and encourage guests to write a note about their vacation to share with future guests. (I love to read the comments, and so do the staff, it’s very rewarding to see how we have helped make a family vacation, family reunion, birthday, honeymoon, anniversary, or simple weekend getaway special). Guests agree that our cabins are different from other Minnesota cabin resorts, and we continue to make frequent updates to ensure that they remain best-in-class and in first-class condition. To highlight some of the top reasons we believe our resort is unique, as well as what’s new in 2023, I am sharing never-seen-before feedback written by actual guests that signed our guestbooks.

“Loved, loved, loved this cabin, can’t believe how clean it was when we arrived!” Party of two from Brooklyn Park, MN (Cabin 3)

Our cabins are beautifully furnished and clean, so clean in that you can walk in, unpack, and immediately relax. You don’t have to give the surfaces a “once over” cleaning or wash the dishes. (Cleanliness has always been important to me, I am the one the family armed with disinfectant wipes yelling “Don’t touch ANYTHING until I wipe it down!) When you rent a cabin, most likely you are planning to cook some or all of your meals. Each cabin has a full kitchen, with full size appliances, and all the dishes, utensils, and cookware and that you need to prepare a meal. We are committed to ensuring you have a great culinary experience while on vacation, and this year we will furnish the cabins with brand new dishes, drinkware, silverware, pots and pans, and knife sets. We strive to equip our kitchens with high-quality wares, similar to what you would stock in your own kitchen. When you check in, our goal is to impress you with our keen attention to detail, so that you can get out on the lake to catch some walleye, cook up an excellent fish fry, and then clean up after dinner, not before.

“Your amenities far exceeded our expectations” – Family of five from Adams, WI (Cabin 2)

Minnesota Cabin Resort
Your cabin rental includes luxury linens, towels and bathrobes, and spa-quality bath amenities. You already have a lot to pack, and whether you are flying in or driving, the last thing you want to bring on vacation is your own linens and towels only to carry them back home and do the extra laundry. I did that for years, and no thank you! When I go on vacation, I want to show up, unpack my clothes, and get outdoors, not make beds. When you stay at The Pines of Kabetogama, the bathrooms include plush, extra-large bath towels and BeeKind® bath amenities (inspired by nature, the high-performance, ecofriendly products will make you feel good). The beds are clean, comfortable, and freshly made up with luxury linens. In 2023, we are featuring brand new, hand-selected (and personally tested) fine linens and bedding to ensure you have a good night’s sleep. Also new this year, sumptuous bathrobes for the principal bedroom of each cabin, crafted with the softest velvet terry fabric to wrap yourself in comfort.

“We had a great two days, we came so our daughter could check Voyageurs off her national park list” – Family of six from Woodbury, MN (Cabin 2)

We believe in flexibility. We know how hard it is to have a wanderlust in your heart but limited time to pursue your passion to travel. That is why we only require a 3-night minimum stay in the peak summer months, with no restrictions on which three nights you choose to stay. If you have a long list of must-visit places and limited time and budget like we did, you don’t have to commit to an entire week-long vacation. You can certainly stay for a week (or longer) if you desire, but it is not required. We want you to see the world and have many wonderful experiences with your family! Hopefully, you enjoy your stay with us and long to come back and visit again (and again).

“The attention to detail is so apparent. Love it” – Party of two from Boynton Beach, FL (Cabin 4)

We aim to impress you before you arrive at The Pines of Kabetogama. We regularly update our website to provide you with accurate information that will answer questions you may have as you evaluate your vacation options. We make it as easy as possible for you to book your vacation by offering you the ability to search for availability online and book your reservation. We also answer our phones year-round and encourage you to call us anytime you have a question, or to book your reservation if you prefer. I enjoy talking to guests on the phone and strive to make a connection so that you are equally as excited to arrive as I am to meet you and your family.

“We had a wonderful time at your beautiful resort! The friendly staff made our visit even better” – Group of teacher friends from Illinois (Paul Bunyan cabin)

We hire friendly and knowledgeable staff members who are dedicated to providing you with an exceptional guest experience from the moment you enter the grounds. Our staff members will greet every guest with a wave and a smile. They will escort you to the office to check in and then to your cabin, where they will point out important features of your unique cabin. We can answer your questions and provide recommendations on everything from where to eat dinner to where the fish are biting that week. We encourage you to take a few moments to get to know us, and ask us anything!

“We had a wonderful time! Beautiful cabin, excellent facilities, loved the Northwoods décor” – Three families from St. Louis, MO (Paul Bunyan Cabin)

Our cabins are clean and elegant, and well-appointed with luxurious amenities and all the kitchen essentials. We also have complementary high-speed WiFi in your cabin and throughout the property and DirecTV so you can stay connected, or not, your choice. You can enjoy a view of the lake from your covered deck, grill your freshly caught fish for dinner, and tell stories and laugh around the campfire in the evening.

“Everything we needed was right here to enjoy, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay” – Family of six from Rochester MN (Paul Bunyan Cabin)

Must-See Minnesota Cabin Resort

While you are here, you can take advantage of our boat rentals, or explore the lake in one of our canoe, kayak, or paddleboard rentals. We also have a small swimming beach and a very popular alligator water trampoline (for kids and adults). Play a lawn game or read a book on our sprawling front lawn. Gather around the community firepit to relax and enjoy the view and meet new friends. (If you are lucky, this is also the perfect place to soak in a spectacular display of the Northern Lights). Forgot something or looking for that special keepsake? Check out our ever-expanding gift shop where you will find the essentials such as live bait, firewood, and ice, an assortment of snacks and beverages, and gifts to remember your vacation.

“We have been very impressed with the beauty of the cabin and the friendliness of the staff. Thank you for creating this beautiful escape. We will be back again” – Party of two from Cedar Rapids IA (Cabin 3)

While we are sad to see our guests leave, nothing thrills us more than knowing you have found a special place to create memories with your loved ones and want to return! Open May – October, we are taking reservations either online or over the phone. Surrounded by the stunning natural landscapes of Voyageurs National Park, combined with our keen attention to detail, we invite you to visit and experience for yourself why The Pines of Kabetogama is a must-see Minnesota cabin resort.
